In June 2005 I was an active 75 year old who enjoyed life. That July I thought my life was over when I learned that I had been diagnosed with both lung and colon cancer. A partial lobectomy was performed in September, followed by a total colectomy in December.

Like most of you I found my recuperation both difficult and depressing. A visiting nurse came to my house to teach me how to cope with my new condition. Only someone in our position can truly appreciate my amazement when she recommended a turkey baster, a sports bottle and a watering can as efficient tools to clean out the ostomy pouch! As if that was not nutty enough, she also suggested many people just squeezed out the waste like a tube of toothpaste.
